Why Catalan? is a trilingual (English, Catalan, Spanish) edition which examines the unique socio-linguistic situation that exists in Catalunya. In part a guide intended to assist newcomers to the region in their transition into this exciting, but often challe nging, environment, this book also provides a forum in which to examine differing viewpoints on the broader issues encountered in the struggle for survival by regional languages and cultures within a larger nationalistic context. Why Catalan? examines the challenges faced by newcomers and native residents alike in the unique "linguistic dance" one must engage in when living in Catalunya, drawing upon the personal experiences of the author, an American who is a longtime Barcelona resident and self-taught fluent Catalan speaker, in his attempts to integrate culturally and linguistically during his time living there. The book emphasizes the importance of bilingualism (Catalan and Castilian) in the region, as this is the practical reality of living there, particularly in larger cities.

The instructional section of the book is divided into various practical segments (communication in the workplace, social situations, etc.) utilizing a refreshing and entertaining approach to learning the language, intended to complement existing language instruction, and functioning as a touchstone for identifying various social responses as indicators of when and how to use Catalan in daily interactions, and offering unique pointers for more rapid immersion into the language and culture. The remaining sections of the book identify the historical struggles encountered by Catalans in maintaining their language and culture within the larger framework of Spain; examine and, when necessary, demystify the various attitudes held by all sides in the discussion of the relevance of Catalan language and culture within that framework; and finally, map out potential solutions for practical and more harmonious integration when living in the region.
